N CASCADE to SUMAS WA

A short drive of about 95 miles brought us to Mt Baker but it was still cloudy so we never saw the glacier laden 10,775’ peak.  However, we did have a fun morning, revisiting Concrete WA which I continually called Cement.  Don explained it all to me when he found the great geocache “Concrete or Cement”.  Cement is an ingredient mixed with sand and gravel to create Concrete.  We enjoyed the beautiful Baker River single span Concrete & Marble bridge over the Baker River that was started in 1912 and finished in 1918.   At that time the longest single span “concrete” bridge in the world.  The walls of the bridge are made of marble!!!  Of course it is on the Nat'l Register of Historic Places.

The community garden was totally fenced in, with bird house on the fence every 4 or 5 feet.  I had to return to it today to capture a photos of the creative birdhouses.  If you can’t beat em, may as well make them comfortable!!!

Then we followed the Nooksack River most of the way to Mt Baker and took a dirt road into the scenic Nooksack Falls.  Well worth it.  We  took the back roads, past Silver Lake to Sumas WA where we settled for the night at Mt Sumas Lodge, just a couple of blocks away from the border crossing.

Tomorrow we head Vancouver Island... to start a one week Canadian Adventure.

Stopped first thing at this irresistible place for
coffee & homemade cookies

Then I photographed this cute church while Don geocached.

The Skagit River which we've been following for days.

AHHH - Concrete - of course their sign is made of CONCRETE.

This beautiful flowering tree captured my curiosity.
NO, not a flowering cherry
