CRUISING - Day 6

Thursday  was our first cloudy day, but that made the blue of the glacier ice even more blue.  The Lamplugh Glacier area was our  “stay and play all day” spot.  Here we explored the front of the glacier (not too close) and shoreline by Kayak.  The rule of the day,  if the iceberg is 10 feet high, stay at least 20 feet away.  Later in the day we chose  a skiff and stroll where we actually got off the skiff and climbed around the granite that surrounded the glacier.  We saw Fireweed just starting to poke its head out of the gravel.  Since we had time, our skiff Captain tried  to get over to John Hopkins Glacier, but the icebergs  got too thick for our little rubber zodiak skiff when we were about 10 minutes away.   It was thrilling to be floating around icebergs and we saw a few harbor seals and bald eagles.   John Hopkins was closed to boat traffic due to harbor seal “pupping”.  On the way to Geikie (pronounced gee kee) Inlet for the night we saw a black bear strolling the shoreline. A great way to end another perfect day and not one drop of rain from those scattered clouds.  Only a few photo comments...they speak for themselves.  Most taken from the kayak, the latter ones from the skiff.                                            Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime day!!!!

You can see how much is below the surface of the water.

And Lamplugh "calved' when we were kayaking by
it's face.  What a thrill.

Can't you just make up a caption for this one?

Fireweed just popping up

Bald Eagle riding an ice berg

John Hopkins Glacier is 12 miles long.  Due to "pupping"
we could not enter this arm.  Enjoy the long distance view.
It was fabulous.
