North Cascades Scenic Highway 20 is rated as one of the nations most spectacular mountain drives (and you can even take your large RV). However, as you know, we’re enjoying the Red Hyunda SUV this trip. Characterized by rugged beauty, this steep mountain range is filled with jagged peaks, deep valleys cascading waterfalls several hundred feet high, mountain lakes and about 300 glaciers. It has long been known as the “North American Alps”. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this beautiful spot, but don’t try it in the winter...it’s closed November thru late April, even though the highest pass is only 5,477 feet. Many points of interest along the route and a fascinating hydro-electric story (that lights the city of Seattle) for the past 90 years or so!!! We stayed at a cute cabin like motel and it was delightful...The Totem Trail Motel in Rockport WA.

A dream shot...not mine, it was on display
in the visitor center - a beautiful elk. |

The 3 hydro-electric lakes facilities |

At the Gorge facility we crossed the 1920's suspension bridge
use by employees for generations |
|
to view the beautiful gardens |
|
the furiously flowing stream and |
|
spectacular waterfalls. |
|
Later we walked across a bridge with an open grated view
down to this river... |
|
which was fed by this towering waterfall... |
|
took 2 photos to capture its massive height. |
|
A close up view of the Diablo Dam overflow system. |

And Diable Lake |
|
After so much beautiful scenery, time for a snack
Hyundai style. |

"Days Gone By" was the place where Don found another
geocache. I think he was more interested in
the 50's something Plymouth!!! |
|
I was curious about this "bedding down place" just
outside the fence, and |
|
decided it had to be a night time resting spot
for something larger than this. |
