Ready for Winter - Heading South #1

Now don’t get excited, I’m not going to post every day, but today was the start of the next 5 months to and in the SW.  The first 2 miles are some of the toughest miles we encounter on our entire trip  as we have to get our big rig “Stubby” (all 35 feet of her + our truck...for a total of 53’) down our driveway.  Then it’s up an average 5.5% grade with an elevation gain of 5000’ for the next 40 miles as we cross over Donner Summit.   MPG up 5.5, down 89,  Average 11.  Sometimes we have to head south thru Sacramento following I-5 to Bakersfield (boring) before heading East over the Tehachapi Mtns, etc... (more boring), due to snow.  But today we left home a day early so we could get over Donner Summit before the snow storm...

We arrived in Hawthorne about 4.5 leisurely hours later.  As I sat knitting, Don did some geocaching.   And as I sit here writing, clouds fill the sky with a threat of 28 degrees in the morning and maybe some wet and white stuff.  A picture is worth a thousand words, so enjoy the ride...(not boring)!!!  The reason Don loves this route is because it’s an easy, minimal traffic, low stress drive and I enjoy the scenery.
