VALLEY OF THE GIANTS and Great Friends!!!

The largest Red Cedar in the World comes in at 63’ 5” circumference with a 19’5” diameter and stands at 172’ tall.  The World’s Largest Spruce Tree 58’11” circumference 191’ tall about 1000 years old Sitka Spruce one of the Quinault Valley’s 6 Champion Trees...well watered with an average rainfall of 12 feet a year.  This tree has received a 922 AFA ranking (American Forest Association) All the other giants in the area have also been ranked by the AFA.    You can pick up a brochure that lists these giants and hike to them all, or visit lakequinaulttravel.org   We visited only two.  These giants have only the redwoods and sequoias to look up to...

We arrived at Tom and Roe Wards beautiful home for a quick 24 hour visit, around 2 p.m.
We enjoyed their beautiful garden (meeting the boys - a couple of black angus steers)  and their fabulous view of Mount Rainier.   After lots of caching up, great home cooked food and laughter, we had time to squeeze in a hike on July 3rd before heading for Packwood WA (near Mt Rainier Nat’l Park).   Taking the back roads, we arrived about 5 p.m. after a stop for a few photos and a geocache.  It was sunny and about 83 degrees!!!  A shorts kind of day.  We’ll spend the next 4 nights at the 101 year old Packwood Hotel and see the sights of Mount Rainier NP before heading for Oregon.

The roots let you know how big the trees are
in this area.
